In a small village, a postmaster receives an anonymous, sizeable cheque meant for whoever can prove they will use it for the community's genuine benefit. Unbeknownst to the villagers, the postman investigating everyone's honesty is actually the wealthy man behind the offer in disguise, while the postmaster's ailing wife hopes the money could pay for her treatment and his daughter navigates a budding romance with the local schoolteacher. As the village's self-important figures—including a priest, landlord, moneylender and physician—scheme and campaign to be seen as most deserving, the story uses their rivalry to poke fun at the workings of democracy.
