Set in Lucknow's courtesan quarter, this 1972 Indian musical drama follows Sahibjaan, a young woman raised into the tawaif profession after her mother's tragic death was tied to a forbidden love affair. During a train journey, a sleeping Sahibjaan is left an anonymous note admiring her beauty, and she later discovers the writer is Salim, a forest ranger, when she takes refuge in his tent after a boating mishap. Their budding romance sets up a conflict between her past occupation and hopes for a new life together.
