In this 1968 Hindi musical comedy, a naive young man falls for the pretty woman living next door but struggles to win her affection, especially as she is drawn to her South Indian music teacher because of his singing. With help from a musically talented friend who secretly sings on his behalf, he attempts to woo her through a series of comic schemes and misunderstandings involving his relatives and rivals. The story is a Bollywood adaptation of a Bengali film that itself drew inspiration from the classic tale of Cyrano de Bergerac.
