Set in Jammu and Kashmir, the story follows a recently retired army officer who takes over as teacher at his late father's struggling rural school to keep it from shutting down. While settling in, he comes across a personal diary left behind by the teacher who taught there before him, and through her writings he begins to feel a deep connection to her even though they have never met. As he works to win over his skeptical students, his growing fascination with the absent teacher shapes both his teaching and his own personal struggles.
