This Bangladeshi-Indian co-production traces the life of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, from his student activism and rise through East Pakistani politics to his leadership during the 1971 independence struggle and his early years as Bangladesh's head of government. Directed by Shyam Benegal, the biographical drama moves between his 1972 homecoming after imprisonment and flashbacks covering the language movement, his political alliances, repeated arrests, and the war that led to Bangladesh's creation. It was made to mark Mujib's birth centenary and stands as the first state-produced biopic about him, as well as Benegal's final film.
