Set in 1950s Mumbai, this romantic comedy follows a jobless cartoonist who agrees to marry a sheltered, wealthy young woman so she can claim her inheritance, under a scheme arranged by her controlling aunt. Unbeknownst to the aunt, the two have already crossed paths at a tennis match, and their arranged union sets off complications as they navigate feelings neither expected. Directed by Guru Dutt, the film was one of his rare forays into comedy and became a notable commercial hit of its time.
