Two estranged business competitors and former friends engage in escalating rivalry, particularly concerning the marriages of their daughters. When one man is humiliated by the other, he seeks revenge by attempting to arrange the latter's daughter's marriage to an unsuitable match—a poor, orphaned laborer from the local market—with the help of a marriage broker.
