A tenant farmer named Damu fights to protect his legal claim to his land against an ambitious landlord named Krishna Nair, with support from a local communist party leader. When a goddess statue is mysteriously discovered on Damu's property, the landlord attempts to exploit local superstition by proposing to build a temple there. The conflict escalates when Krishna Nair is killed and Damu goes into hiding, leaving his wife to continue the struggle to reclaim their land.
