Marking Kamal Amrohi's directing debut for Bombay Talkies, this 1949 Hindi film follows a wealthy man who moves into an old, deserted mansion and begins experiencing eerie visions of a woman who insists she was his lover in a past life. As he becomes drawn into the mystery surrounding a decades-old, unfinished love story tied to the estate, the boundaries between the supernatural and reality blur, setting off a chain of consequences for him and those around him. Regarded as an early landmark of Bollywood horror and romance, the film also gave rise to the careers of its lead actress and its playback singer.
