Kismath is a 2016 Malayalam romantic drama marking director Shanavas K Bavakutty's debut, centered on Irfan and Anita, a couple from differing religious communities, Islam and Hinduism, who fall in love despite social opposition. The story draws on an actual incident from Ponnani, Kerala, involving a young Muslim man and an older woman from a scheduled caste who endured public hostility over their relationship in 2011, an event the director witnessed firsthand as a local councillor. The film premiered in theaters in July 2016 and went on to perform well at the box office.
