Kasthuri Maan follows Umashankari, a spirited college student who copes with financial hardship and family troubles at home, including unwanted attention from her sister's husband. She becomes devoted to helping her classmate Arunachalam prepare for the civil services exam, supporting his ambition to become an IAS officer while he pledges to marry her and lift her out of her difficult circumstances. Told partly through flashback from a point when Arunachalam has achieved his goal, the story traces their struggles as their personal lives grow complicated.
