This 1931 drama dramatizes the legend of the Sanskrit poet Kalidasa, beginning with a princess named Vidhyadhari who refuses an arranged match proposed by her father's minister. In retaliation, the minister tricks her into marrying an uneducated herdsman found in the forest, and upon discovering the deception she turns to the goddess Kali for help. Directed by H. M. Reddy, the film holds historical significance as the first talkie made in a Dravidian language, mixing Telugu dialogue with Tamil songs.
