A former ship captain, haunted by shame after abandoning a vessel and its passengers, takes up work in a coal mine to escape his tarnished reputation. There he forms bonds with a mine engineer and a fugitive laborer, while a doctor pushes him to confront his past, and together the workers clash with a profit-driven mine owner over unsafe conditions. Their struggle intensifies when a dangerous flood threatens the miners trapped below ground, based on a real mining tragedy.
