Directed by artist M. F. Husain, this 2000 Hindi film follows an enigmatic feminine presence, embodied across four incarnations played by Madhuri Dixit, who moves through different eras and cultures as a muse and source of fascination. She appears as a blind woman in ancient Banaras who sparks a women's uprising, as the forest-dwelling heroine of Kalidas's Shakuntala, as the model behind Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, and as a contemporary woman named Monika, while the god of love pursues her throughout history. The film juxtaposes art and science, past and present, using recurring symbols like a dividing wall and a burden a woman carries on her head to suggest that human ideas endure even as eras change.
