Set in rural Punjab, this 1986 drama follows Rano, a strong-willed woman trapped in an unhappy marriage to her alcoholic husband Trilok, whose family constantly demeans her over her dowry. After a violent incident tied to Trilok's actions leads to his death, custom compels Rano to remarry his much younger brother, setting up a fraught new relationship complicated by his feelings for another woman. The film is based on Rajinder Singh Bedi's award-winning Urdu novella and features performances by Hema Malini, Rishi Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.
