When the arrogant chief minister of a fictional Indian state is jailed over a corruption case, he hands over power to his wife and finds himself facing a strict new jail superintendent who strips him of his usual privileges. Mocked for having dropped out of school in eighth grade, he sets out to earn his tenth-grade diploma from behind bars, a pursuit that gradually reshapes his outlook even as his wife maneuvers to keep control of his political position. The story follows his unlikely academic journey alongside a growing rivalry-turned-respect with the officer overseeing the prison.
