Set in the Chambal region, this 1987 Hindi dacoit drama follows Arjun Yadav, a college-educated young man who returns to his village and falls for Chavli, a local fisherwoman. Committed to nonviolence, Arjun tries to broker peace between the villagers and a tyrannical landlord backed by a corrupt police inspector, but their scheming leads to devastating violence against his family, pushing him toward the ravines and the world of outlaws. The film traces his transformation from an idealistic pacifist into a feared bandit, framing banditry as a consequence of entrenched rural oppression rather than innate criminality.
