CzechMate: In Search of Jiří Menzel

This seven-and-a-half-hour documentary examines the career of Czech director Jiří Menzel and the broader Czechoslovak cinema movement of the 1950s-70s. Through archival materials, film excerpts, and extensive interviews with approximately 20 filmmakers and collaborators from the era—including figures like Miloš Forman, Věra Chytilová, and Ken Loach—the film documents the influence and legacy of this pivotal period in cinema history. Notably, several of the interviewed directors passed away during the film's eight-year production, making their contributions to the documentary their final recorded appearances.
