A grieving widow, unable to support her ailing infant, leaves the baby at the doorstep of a wealthy childless man and later returns as the child's nanny, watching her grow up without revealing the truth of her birth. Years later, the young woman falls for her tutor, who turns out to be the poet she admires, but her guardian's plans for her marriage to another man threaten to unravel old secrets and test the bonds between the two families.
