Bandit Queen

This 1994 Hindi-language biographical drama, directed by Shekhar Kapur, traces the harrowing early life of Phoolan Devi, a woman from a low-ranking caste in rural Uttar Pradesh who endures a forced marriage, abuse, and mistreatment by higher-caste men and corrupt police. Cast out by her community, she becomes entangled with a gang of rural outlaws, where shifting loyalties and violent power struggles among the bandits shape her path toward resistance. The film is adapted from a nonfiction account of Devi's life and premiered at international festivals following its release in India.
