This 2001 Hindi historical drama, directed by Santosh Sivan, dramatizes the youth of the future Mauryan emperor Ashoka, played by Shah Rukh Khan. It follows his rise as a skilled but conflict-prone prince who is sent away from the royal court, falls in love while traveling incognito, suffers personal tragedy, and becomes hardened through battle and loss before eventually remarrying and returning to the capital.
