The story follows their move through several towns as she learns to read and write, and shows how correspondence with an American acquaintance and a public speech defending her ambitions lead to her traveling alone to the United States to study medicine at a women's medical college in Pennsylvania. It depicts the personal and societal struggles she faces as one of the earliest Indian women to seek a medical degree abroad.
