Ammakilikkoodu (2003) is a Malayalam drama, marking director M. Padmakumar's debut, about Vivek, who takes charge of a struggling old-age home called Karunalayam. While trying to keep the shelter running despite its owner's plans to sell it, he grows close to Akhila, a young woman whose mentally ill mother had been mistreated by her stepfather, and whose family background is entangled with inheritance disputes.
