Set in a rural village, the story follows Sakkarai, an orphaned young man with a mental disability who is often exploited by those around him while working for the local chief, Thevar. Sakkarai grows attached to Thevar's daughter, Thamarai, and a man humiliated by her manipulates Sakkarai into a relationship with her, setting off a chain of consequences once her father discovers it and moves to marry her off to someone else. The film is a Tamil-language remake of an earlier Malayalam drama.
