Set in a rural village, the story follows Madhava, a devoted cowherd and servant who acts as Shiva in local folk plays, and Hema, the daughter of his employer, a poet whose old-fashioned verses have fallen out of favor. Bound by unspoken affection but separated by caste and class differences, their bond is tested after a family tragedy pushes Hema into a psychiatric institution, prompting Madhava to feign mental illness so he can be admitted there and watch over her. The film follows his struggles inside the asylum as he tries to help her recover.
